Smite vs. League of Legends – Key Differences & Similarities

It goes without saying that League of Legends is not the only MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game out there. While the logic of MOBA games is more or less the same, two teams of players competing against each other on a familiar battlefield, there are nuances.

Today, we are going to discuss the differences between Smite and League of Legends. SMITE was released in 2014. Like League of Legends, it’s a free-to-play MOBA. It’s also a mix of first-person and third-person game. You are playing as a summoner, but you are watching it as a third-person. However, while the logic is similar, the feel is not the same.

Of course, you can play multiple MOBA games, but most players tend to focus on one, as understanding the logic of the game takes a lot of time. So, let’s see what is the same and what’s not.

    Gameplay

As we said, you are controlling a champion in both games and looking at it from the third person. However, the view is not the same. League of Legends is played from a top-down perspective, allowing for a good overview of the arena.

Smite uses a sort of over-the-shoulder view of the player. This makes the game feel more fast-paced since you are often limited to just what is happening in your lane. Also, the WASD keys are used to control the player, and then you click for an attack.

It’s hard to say who is the winner here because it all depends on your gaming style. You might prefer over the shoulder view or top-down.

    Champions

What might attract you to a MOBA game is the aesthetics of the champions or their stories. Striking a balance between too many champions and not enough is a hard thing to balance. As of February 2022, League of Legends has 159 champions, while Smite has 118.

The champions are actually called gods. In Smite, there are four types of champions, the gods are divided into deities, immortals, heroes, and mythical beings. These types can be seen like regions in League of Legends, possibly. But much like a League, there are five classes.

There’s a mage, hunter, warrior, assassin, and guardian. In League, these are controller, fighter, mage, tank, and specialist. Some would even say League has six categories assassin, fighter, mage, support, tank, and marksman. These classes often overlap, and sometimes there is a #BreakTheMeta trend to play a champion the way it wasn’t developed.

People who played both games say that League of Legends wins in this category because there are more unique champions to choose from. The main complaint is that gods in Smite often overlap, and it’s hard to distinguish them.

    Players and Community

When it comes to the size of the community, League of Legends is an obvious winner. As of 2021, Smite had around 30 million players in total, while LoL had 180 million. On average, 130,255,019 played League of Legends within the last 30 days, while 293,357 played Smite, according to Active Player.

It seems like Smite peaked sometime in 2019 and saw a significant drop in players later on. Unfortunately, both communities have a problem with toxic players. (capitolcorridor.org) But this is a problem that’s not unique to a game but to gaming culture as a whole. We need to be kinder.

Moreover, according to LoL Smurfs, the prize for the 2016 World Championship in Smite was 1 million USD, while the prize for the League of Legends Championship was 5 million USD. If you are considering becoming an eSports athlete, maybe you are attracted to Smite because of lower competition, but there is a lower prize fund too. Not that we would be opposed to someone handing us a million!

    Conclusion

If you read the name of this blog, you know what is our preferred MOBA game already. However, it’s not illegal to like and play more than one. There are some things you can find in other games that League of Legends does not offer the over-the-shoulder view, and if that is something you prefer, Smite is the game for you.

Moreover, if you prefer moving around on the WASD controls, this is something for you. However, there is a way to modify controls in League of Legends to your taste. This should not be a deal-breaker. Or, you might prefer a smaller community. Then, Smite can be an excellent choice for you. A smaller community also means less competition, and if you are considering going pro, this could be a game for you to test your abilities in a less competitive environment.
