There’s a little something called Spectator Mode in League of Legends. At one point in time, it was referred to as the Summer Spell/Observer. This mode allows the players to watch a match without having to take part in it physically. This mode was introduced back in Season One Championship. However, since it was released, it hasn’t been all that popular, so not many folks know about it.
Back in 2011 of November, this mode was reintroduced to custom games for beta testing. This model has been implemented into normal games since then, but they have limits to prevent cheating.

Spectator Mode
In LoL, you can observe a game in progress in Spectator Modes. As a Spectating player, you’re not going to have a champion, or team affiliation – you’ll just be there. You will be able to jump from team to team.
As a spectator, you can also remove the fog of war, giving you a global view of the match. You will also be able to quickly look at the information on either team, including the item builds, in-game stats, gold totals, and even the ability cooldowns.
Spectating Friends
Wouldn’t it be cool to stalk your friends and see how they play when you’re not around? Well, thanks to the spectator mode, you can. In League of Legends, you can spectate your friends’ games after the champion selection. All you have to do is right-click on the friend in the friend’s list and from there, click on “Spectate.” You will need to do this in the League of Legends client.

Stuck in Spectator Mode
During Patch 9.13, some players found themselves stuck in Spectator Mode. No matter what they did, they just couldn’t seem to leave Spectator Mode. The play Button, along with others, just didn’t show up for them.
Since you may be messing around with Spectator Mode soon, I want to tell you how to get yourself out of it if you ever do find yourself stuck. After some research on this issue, I discovered that some were able to fix this issue by the following:
YAML Deletion
- Launch LoL – Log in and minimize the client.
- Configuration Folder – Next, you will want to go to the LoL configuration folder. By default, this folder is located at C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Config.
- Delete – Once you find the folder listed above, you will want to delete the file called LeagueClientSettings.yam.
- Restart – now, make sure you restart the client.
Disable Close Client
- Click on the options button.
- Browse to client/general
- Un-check the “Close client during game” option
- Now, restart the client.
If those two options didn’t work for you, we have some more steps you can follow.
Disable Low Spec Mode
- Click the options button.
- Browse to client/general
- Uncheck the Enable Low Spec Mode option
- Restart the client.
Wipe the Config Files
Another option you have is to wipe the config files. Follow these steps:
Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Config
Once you’re in the folder, delete everything in there.
Now you will need to restart the client.
If none of this works, you can always do a clean reinstall of the client.
To reinstall the LoL client, use the Hextech Repair Tool (you can find it by searching on Google). When you install the HRT, make sure you install it as an admin and run it from your desktop as an admin.
Once you open it, you will be able to begin the reinstallation process with ah Hectech Repair Tool by checking the reinstall option and then Clean Uninstall before running it.
Final Word
I have a friend who I asked how to spectate any League of Legends match, and he told me to go to op.gg – I went there, and it was beneficial, which is why I’m recommending it to my followed right now. Op.gg is an excellent way to spectate any League of Legends match, so go ahead and give it a try.
